EME Journal #9
I have experienced a great deal of distant learning in my education journey. Covid hit in the middle of my senior year of high school, which was a devastating experience. Many of my classes dismissed the work we had due, but a few of them hosted Zoom sessions. These Zoom sessions mostly consisted of our teachers offering their support rather than scurrying to get our work in. When I got to FSU, everything was completely remote. The buildings were not fully open, and there were many rules on campus. We couldn’t even go into the common areas at our dorms to hang out with friends. At first, I hated distant learning. I felt like I wasn’t learning anything or getting the full college experience. After classes went back to in person, I realized that I was not acclimated to the college class environment. It was difficult for me to go to class, and I got antsy so easily. As a teacher, I will be sure to understand my students troubles and give breaks when needed, while making assignments as enjoyable and fun as possible to keep interest.
Open educational resources are resources that are available to the public with no cost. Some examples of these are open textbooks, websites, or streaming videos. One specific website that falls in this category is Khan Academy. This website offers free lessons on a wide range of topics for any grade K-12. There are instructional videos, practice, and assessments to test your knowledge. I used this website plenty of times in middle and high school, and found it to be one of the most beneficial resources for my education experience.
While working on Assignment 4, I was able to touch up some of my PowerPoint skills. Full transparency, I do not like working on Microsoft PowerPoint. I grew up working with Google applications, so Slides is way more familiar to me and easier to navigate. However, I did learn a new skill for this assignment: how to record myself reading my slides. This would be super beneficial for distant learning so students can gather even more information that might not be written on the slides.
